The pussy hats were an easy project; she should be finished by morning. While it was dark, Henrietta pulled out her special project, the one she made sure to bring on the trip, the one with the double-pointed needles and the softest possible yarn. The project made her think of St. Agatha, the patron saint of breast cancer patients. And whether or not it was worth praying to her.
They pulled into a rest stop somewhere outside of Terre Haute, Indiana. It looked like they were out in the middle of nowhere with only corn stalks for company. Birdie wondered if there was anything in Indiana besides corn fields.
Tall steel lamps bent their heads like swans. Their light loomed ghostly in the darkness. The glass windows of the rest stop looked even more dirty in the half-light. Birdie snapped a picture, wondering what kind of image this light would make.
There were only a few other buses this time. Sleepy-eyed marchers were too tired to make stops at the gift shop or pick up snacks. Hennie didnât ask Birdie to follow her into the restroom stall; she just did.
After they were back on the bus, Alexandra Hall made an announcement. âWeâre not far from Indianapolis, marchers. After that, weâll pass through Columbus, Ohio, and then West Virginia. Khalid wants to make time overnight. Get some rest. Youâll be marching your legs off tomorrow. Good night, marchers.â
Khalid started up the engine. âIn morning. Wake up DC. Ready to march.â The marchers were too tired to clap. Most of the overhead lights had been turned off. Only a few of them winked overhead like fireflies. The darkness and the rocking of the bus put most of the marchers to sleep.
Birdie plugged her phone into the overhead charger: there would be lots of pictures to take tomorrow. Soon Birdie was dreaming.
